Botetourt County Adopts Tourism Strategic Plan

Botetourt County Adopts Tourism Strategic Plan

Fincastle, VA – The Botetourt County Board of Supervisors gave unanimous approval to the new Tourism Strategic Plan presented at its January meeting. The plan is designed to guide staff, community partners, and other stakeholders on strategies to increase visitation to Botetourt for the next five-year period.
This is the second Tourism Strategic Plan to be adopted since the Office of Tourism was established in 2006, with the latest being created following a series of meetings of the Tourism Strategic Plan Committee facilitated by Randall Rose, Partnership Alliance Marketing Development Specialist for the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC).
According Kevin Costello, Botetourt County Tourism Coordinator, "The new plan affirms the County’s commitment to develop a sustainable tourism program that stimulates economic growth while preserving, protecting, and enhancing residents’ quality of life." The committee identified four specific objectives:
  • Build upon successful tourism marketing strategies by enhancing and measuring future efforts to further increase success.
  • Further evaluate tourism infrastructure needs and strive to address all needs in a feasible and prioritized order.
  • Increase the capacity (staffing, funding, etc.) of the tourism office.
  • Enhance services and opportunities to the County’s tourism businesses/industry to encourage their success.
For each of the objectives, targets and measures were derived from the steering committee’s situational analysis.
According to the latest data from the VTC, visitors spent $44 million in Botetourt County in 2008, supporting 250 businesses, creating more than 400 direct jobs, and generating $3.1 million in state and local taxes. ”We are delighted to work with Kevin Costello and Botetourt County as a valuable tourism industry partner”, said Randall Rose. “Tourism is a substantial revenue generator and vitally important to Virginia communities and this new strategic plan will help Botetourt County focus its tourism efforts to further develop that revenue potential.”
