Library Fines Going Up

Fines at all of the Roanoke Valley Libraries will be going up effective July 1. The change affects the public libraries in Botetourt County, Roanoke County, Roanoke City and Salem.

The new fine rate for overdue books is 20 cents per day up to a maximum of $5.00 per item. The previous fine was 10 cents per day. Fines for overdue DVDs and videos will remain at $1.00 per day up to a maximum of $5.00 per item. One very important change is that the amount of fines a patron can carry before being blocked from checking out items will go down to $10.00. The previous limit was $25.00. Loan periods for all library items will be unchanged.

This increase in fines is the first increase since the Roanoke Valley library consortium was organized in 1991. It is hoped that these changes will prove to be an incentive for patrons to bring back their borrowed materials promptly.
