Botetourt County will be losing over 100 jobs because of a closing of a correctional facility in Troutville.
The closing comes as Virginia Governor Tim Kaines moves to make up a $1.36 revenue shortfall for the fiscal year 2010 budget. Cuts to many other services can be expected.
The correctional facility, known as Camp 25, contributes no revenue to Botetourt, County Administrator Jerry Burgess said, but inmates have proved useful in a number of county and town projects. "Those guys have done a great job over the years in using the inmates to clean up and help with things around the county," Burgess said in a telephone interview today.
He noted that the camp has a renowned rehabilitation program for the inmates. "It's just kind of unbelievable to me," he said of the closing.
