Lewis Medlin Jr., a Bedford County resident, formally announced his candidacy Thursday for the 19th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.
The district covers the city of Bedford, part of Bedford County and much of Botetourt County.
Medlin runs a family business in Montvale that manufactures metal brackets used in commercial construction.
Medlin, 56, is seeking the Democratic Party nomination for the November election, and could be a challenger to Lacey Putney, a longtime independent who has served in the House of Delegates since 1962.
Putney could not be reached for comment on whether he plans to run again.
Medlin said in November he planned to run for the office. In preparation, he took a three-day-long candidate training program last year at the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia.
Medlin said if elected he wants to focus on getting public schools to provide preschool classes, refunding excess tax dollars from the state budget back to taxpayers, improving safety on rural roads and cracking down on parents who don't pay their share of child support.
